Flyers off-season moves

The Flyers looked like they couldn’t win the Calder Cup in the playoffs this year, so here’s what they need to do.

1. Trade Carter for a starting goalie. Carter is great during the season, but disappears during the playoffs. He should bring enough attention to get a game-stealing goalie. It would also give Bobrovsky another season to really mature into the great goalie that he has the potential to become.

2. Take the captaincy from Richards. Similar to Lindros, he’s a good player, and a physical player, but he’s not a leader. Who to give it to? Some might say Pronger, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say give the C to Carcillo. That man plays with fire every game and seems like he’d be a great motivator in the locker room.

3. Put Zherdev on the first line and put him on the power play. He toughened up his game during the playoffs and he has the potential to be a 50-goal scorer during the season.

4. Trade Hartnell for a bag of pucks. He’s slow, he falls a lot, and he can’t hit the net.

5. Make Ian LaPerriere the defense coach. I saw nobody going down to block shots this playoffs. Ian lost his career to blocking shots. The defense needs someone to motivate them into performing better.

6. Trade Leighton. His back is injured, he lets in soft goals, and having four goalies is ridiculous. Maybe get some draft picks for him so the Phantoms can climb out of the bottom of the AHL.

7. Make a decision on Backlund. I feel sorry for the guy.

8. Make a decision on Boucher. With Bob and unknown #1, the Flyers have nowhere to play him. He’s a great guy and deserves to play somewhere.

Kohls, Penguins, and Fashion

October 14, 2010 Leave a comment

We went to the new Kohl’s last night after having dinner at Applebees. It is much larger and much brighter than the store in Park City. I even bought some clothes there! If you’re out that way, definitely check it out.

Penguins are winless in their new arena. Are the spirits of the Igloo angry? Is there some design defect preventing the team from playing well? No, they just suck. 😉

Is it just me, or has fashion now reverted to the mid ’90s? Plaid shirts, straight-leg jeans, long hair.

Comcast and Philadelphia Sports

October 11, 2010 1 comment

The NHL season having started, I’ve been searching for ways to watch the Flyers without paying Comcast an extra $45 per month. Paying that much just to watch hockey games occasionally is not going to happen.

I’ve looked into my other options. offers a service to watch every game in the league on their website. It’s not cheap ($20 per month), but it’s better than nothing and the quality isn’t too bad. Unfortunately, blackout rules apply, and since I’m too close to Philadelphia, I can’t watch Flyers (or Crapitals) on there.

Same deal with Yahoo Sports and NHL Center Ice.

My solution? I’ve found that I can watch illegal streams on sites like The quality usually stinks, but at least I can watch the games (assuming someone is streaming that night).

It’s ridiculous, and it’s all because of blackout rules. I am more than willing to pay a reasonable price to watch games online but the NHL refuses to take my money, instead stating that these services are for fans that don’t live near their team’s hometown, and not just another option to watch the local team. I don’t get it. Money is money, but apparently because I could give Comcast $45 more each month (that would be $450 for the season and playoffs), I’m not good enough.

I don’t like it, but illegal streaming it is. Please NHL: get rid of the antiquated blackout rule and let me give you my money.

Possible Flyers Trades 2010

June 10, 2010 1 comment
Here’s what I came up with.
Forwards to keep:
  • Briere
  • Gagne
  • Hartnell
  • Leino
  • Carter
  • Richards
  • Giroux
  • JVR
  • Lappy
  • Powe
Forwards to put up for trade:
  • Laliberte
  • Carcillo (fun to watch, but takes too many penalties)
  • Nodl
  • Ross
  • Asham
  • Betts
Forwards to definitely trade:
  • Cote (worthless in today’s league)
Defense to Keep:

  • Pronger
  • Timonen
  • Carle
  • Coburn
  • Parent (he’s still young)

Defense up for trade:

  • Krajicek
  • Syvret
  • Bartulis (he’s young too, but we might get something for him)
Goalies to keep:
  • Leighton as backup
Goalies to trade:
  • Boucher (I like him, but he’s no good in the backup role and not good enough to be a Cup winner)
  • Emery (if he can ever play again)

After all that, the Flyers need to sign a starting goalie, OR sign Leighton as the starter and get a young goalie to put in the backup role. Maybe Backlund can be this guy.
